Dating back to 1957, the tradition began when a local barber, Finis Gold, noticed residents skipping work and school to go “sucker grabbin’” along nearby waterways. That local pastime grew into the festival known today, where one of the highlights is trying fried sucker fish, a nod to Nixa’s roots and a tradition that continues to bring the community together year after year.
