Did you know? The first major battle of the U.S. Civil War fought west of the Mississippi River happened in Missouri. You can learn about this famous battle at Wilson’s Creek National Battlefield near Republic, Mo., one of seven units of the nationalparkservice located in #Missouri
This site is fee-free year-round. No entrance fee or pass is required. The site came under #nps control in 1960. The site preserves 1,750 acres of the battlefield.
The Battle of Wilson’s Creek, fought on August 10, 1861, was a Confederate victory. Confederate commanders at the battle included Brig. Gen. Benjamin McCulloch, Major Gen. Sterling Price and Brig. Gen. Nicholas Bartlett Pearce. Union commanders included Brig. Gen. Nathanial Lyon (who died at the battle and was the first Union general killed in battle in the Civil War), along with Col. Franz Sigel and Maj. Samuel Sturgis.
At the site’s visitor center, you can tour a museum and watch a movie about the battle. Then, take the self-guided auto tour along an approximate 5-mile paved loop road and stop at eight interpretive stops at significant locations, including the Ray House, Bloody Hill and more. The one-way tour road includes a non-motorized lane for walkers, runners and cyclists.
