Trail Heads
Cobb Ridge Recreation Area
Cobb Ridge Recreation Area serves as the main campground for the Chadwick Motorized Trail System and offers direct trail access for overnight visitors. Located near the center of the trail system on the KC Pavilion side, it’s a popular basecamp for riders planning to spend multiple days exploring. The campground includes around 45 campsites with a mix of electric and non-electric options, along with amenities like restrooms, drinking water, trash service, and a shower building. Campsites are equipped with picnic tables and fire rings, and a year-round on-site host is available. While it’s not an official day-use trailhead and doesn’t have designated trailer parking for staging, it fills up quickly on weekends and is best suited for those planning to camp and ride rather than visit for the day.
KC Pavilion Trailhead
KC Pavilion is the western trailhead for Chadwick and sits near the Cobb Ridge side of the system. It’s a strong option for riders looking for a developed staging area and access to multiple trail connections. From Chadwick, take Highway 125 south about 1.5 miles, turn right onto Highway H, go about 2 miles, then turn right onto Lookout Road. Continue to where the pavement ends, go straight about 1/10 mile, and stay left at the next junction. KC Pavilion has parking for about 20 vehicles with trailers.
Camp Ridge Trailhead
Camp Ridge is the northern access point to the Chadwick Motorized Trails System and one of the easiest options for visitors bringing trailers. This trailhead offers straightforward access into the system and has parking for up to 25 vehicles with trailers. From Chadwick, take Highway 125 south about 1.5 miles, turn right onto Highway H, and continue about 1 mile. The trailhead will be on the right.
Oak Camp Trailhead
Oak Camp is the southern trailhead and the smallest of the three official access points into Chadwick. It’s a quieter, more basic option with room for about 3 vehicles with trailers. From Chadwick, take Highway 125 south about 1.5 miles, turn right onto Highway H, and continue about 4 miles. The trailhead will be on the right. Restrooms are not available at Oak Camp.
Trail Highlights
- Easy Trails: Several beginner-friendly trails offer smooth riding with minimal obstacles, perfect for less experienced riders or those looking for a more leisurely ride.
- Moderate Trails: Intermediate trails feature more rugged terrain, with rocks, hills, and narrow paths that require more technical skill.
- Difficult Trails: For the experienced rider, Chadwick’s difficult trails offer steep climbs, rocky outcrops, and challenging switchbacks. These trails test both skill and endurance, rewarding riders with stunning views of the Ozarks.
Permits & Requirements
All riders must obtain a daily or annual riding permit. These permits are available for purchase at local vendors or online through the Mark Twain National Forest website. Riders are required to wear helmets and comply with U.S. Forest Service regulations for off-road vehicles. Permits help maintain the trails and ensure the area remains safe and enjoyable for all users.
Safety & Regulations
The Chadwick Motorcycle and ATV Use Area includes a designated trials bike area and a fun off-trail riding zone. Outside of this area, riders MUST stay on numbered trails. Off-trail riding is strictly prohibited, and it’s essential to avoid traveling on closed routes or engaging in hill climbing. Helmets are required for riders under 18 and recommended for all others. All motorized vehicles are required to have a muffler and spark arrestor for environmental and safety purposes. Riders should check with the Ava Ranger District office for trail conditions and closures before visiting. For more information on rules and regulations, please visit the U.S. Forest Service.
